Carol Galligan, Birth Memorial January 2004
painting detail
The 'privilege' of childbirth took the lives of 300,000 women between the years of 1910 and 1925. That's more than all the men who dies in American wars from the revolutions until World War I. - A Century of Women
Carol Galligan's Birth Memorial recognizes all the women who have perished in the act of bringing forth life. This installation functions as a shrine and is composed of forty paintings which utilize female symbology. Images of wings, the fetus, and the egg represent birth, life, death, and transcendence. The project continues Galligan's exploration of cyclical processes and spiritual renewal.
